Men’s trio stableford 20/5/2012
The competitions at Cleobury continue to be ever popular with a great field once again taking on the summer conditions. The trio is a unique competition with the best score counting on the first six holes, the best two on the next six and finally all three on the final six. Josh Allcock, Will Edwards and Robin Craig thought they did enough with their score of 78. However they were just pipped by the mighty trio of Richard Chandler, Jez Duffield and the man simply know as Tram. They recorded 80 points despite nearly throwing it away on the last with just two points between them.
The relieved trio had this to say once their victory was secured ‘we gelled well as a team and played some great golf when needed, a cheeky birdie on the 17th from Richard certainly helped the scorecard’

Well played lads!!
After a disappointing start to the Handicap League season, with a loss and a halved match in the first two home matches, captain Tony Willetts decided that a different selection strategy was needed for the first away match against Perdiswell Park …….. so he dropped himself from the team!
This game plan almost back-fired before the first ball was hit with one of his team (Pat Fleming) turning up just a few minutes before his match was due to start after going to completely the wrong place !!
However, the change in team selection policy worked as the team romped home to a 5:1 win with no pair losing their individual matches.
First out, and biggest winners of the day were Steve Lau and Vi Van who had a comfortable 4&3 victory.
Junior member Robin Craig was impressive in his match with Rick Clayton as they won 2&1.
Joe Harper and Paul Liggins had a closer match which went all the way to the final hole with Joe and Paul eventually running out winners (1 up).
So with the first three matches all being won by Cleobury, only a half was required from any of the final three matches to seal victory.
The next pairing of Pat Fleming and Mark Shorter duly doing the business with a half in their match.
This just left the ever-reliable John Swithenby, playing with Andy Galliard to get another half in their match, before the final pairing of Bob Lucas and Gordon Moraity maintained their 100% record of 3 wins out of 3 this season with a 2 & 1 victory.
After the match (and following a whip-round for a new Sat Nav for Pat) captain Tony Willetts said “This was a marvellous performance by the Cleobury team and obviously I’ll need to drop myself more often! Our next Handicap League match should prove to be a much tougher test as we’re away at Bromsgrove. Few teams come away from Bromsgrove with a win so every player will have to perform well – but today’s match shows that we’re more than capable of going to any course and getting a result.”

Men’s Medal
The men’s April medal once again saw a huge field take on the Spring conditions. Some fantastic scores were once again posted, with many players signaling their intent for a big season. Joe Harper and Josh Allcock shot a nett 67 and 68 to finish second in their perspective divisions. Mark Fish had the lowest score of the day with a 65 to take division one. The day however belonged to Simon Johnson who shot a nett 66 to take division two. Simon did the damage with the Nike VRS driver and his new Cleveland CG16 irons. Simon had seen his handicap steadily increasing, however the new equipment has transformed his game.
‘My driving is now so much straighter and longer which is leaving me less yardage into the green. The CG16 irons are very accurate which has made scoring so much easier’.
Simon has now seen his handicap cut and has set his sights on becoming a low teen handicapper. ‘My goal is to get down to 12 this year, with these clubs in my bag I am confident it can happen’.
Well played Simon!

Men’s Medal 14/4/12
The first medal of the season saw a massive field turn out, with what was the busiest medal in recent memory with all but two tee time fully booked. Roger Evans in his first competition since his return to Cleobury shot a 69 to give him second place in division 2. Jack Pringle equaled the lowest gross of the day to record a 68 which was good enough for second spot in division one.
Richard Daley who always performs in team competitions showed his individual side with a 67 to take division 2. Daley now sees his handicap cut and is closer to reaching his quest of becoming an 18 handicap golfer.
Division one was taken by Sam Pain who was part of the first group out at 7.30am, he managed to hold onto top spot all day with a 3 under par gross to give him a nett 67. This great score was helped by a stunning front nine with a birdie blitz around the Badgers Sett course.
Sam had this to say after his victory ‘I need to get down to scratch in the next six weeks, afters todays result I am getting closer. The great condition of the greens certainly helped me post this score, I haven’t played on better all year’.
Final standings
Division 1
Sam Pain - 67 nett
Jack Pringle - 68 nett
Division 2
Rich Daley - 67 nett
Roger Evans - 69 nett
