Handicap League – Match Report v Perdiswell Park

After a disappointing start to the Handicap League season, with a loss and a halved match in the first two home matches, captain Tony Willetts decided that a different selection strategy was needed for the first away match against Perdiswell Park …….. so he dropped himself from the team!

This game plan almost back-fired before the first ball was hit with one of his team (Pat Fleming) turning up just a few minutes before his match was due to start after going to completely the wrong place !!

However, the change in team selection policy worked as the team romped home to a 5:1 win with no pair losing their individual matches.

First out, and biggest winners of the day were Steve Lau and Vi Van who had a comfortable 4&3 victory.

Junior member Robin Craig was impressive in his match with Rick Clayton as they won 2&1.

Joe Harper and Paul Liggins had a closer match which went all the way to the final hole with Joe and Paul eventually running out winners (1 up).

So with the first three matches all being won by Cleobury, only a half was required from any of the final three matches to seal victory.

The next pairing of Pat Fleming and Mark Shorter duly doing the business with a half in their match.

This just left the ever-reliable John Swithenby, playing with Andy Galliard to get another half in their match, before the final pairing of Bob Lucas and Gordon Moraity maintained their 100% record of 3 wins out of 3 this season with a 2 & 1 victory.

After the match (and following a whip-round for a new Sat Nav for Pat) captain Tony Willetts said “This was a marvellous performance by the Cleobury team and obviously I’ll need to drop myself more often! Our next Handicap League match should prove to be a much tougher test as we’re away at Bromsgrove. Few teams come away from Bromsgrove with a win so every player will have to perform well – but today’s match shows that we’re more than capable of going to any course and getting a result.”

Pinner Platter Starts 2 weeks today!!!

This is open to all mixed pairings, last year we averaged 14 pairings per week - we can go even better this year.

Handicap League – Match Report v Gaudet Luce (1st April 2012)

The first Handicap League match of the season was played at home against Gaudet Luce on Sunday 1st April.

This year’s captain, Tony Willetts selected three players who were playing in this format for the first time (Martin Bower, Joe Harper and Dan Clark).

With no matches being halved and results alternating between either side, the final outcome wasn’t settled until the last match came in.

The first pairing of Martin Bower/Glen Tramaseur fought all the way in their match, only losing on the last hole.

Then came two wins from the pairings of Bob Lucas/Gordon Moraity, who had the biggest win for Cleobury (5&4) and John Westley/Joe Harper (3&2).

Captain Tony Willetts thought it was going to be his day in his match with playing partner Rick Clayton – Standing in the middle of the first fairway, he watched his opponent from Gaudet Luce hit his approach to within just a few feet of the hole. Then after joking with his opponent that he better try and hit his shot inside that …… he holed out !

Unfortunately, that was where the luck ran out on the day as Willetts/Clayton came up against a very good pairing from Gaudet Luce, with their 10 handicapper playing to 3 over gross - Willetts/Clayton eventually losing 3&2.

Similarly Robin Craig/Andy Galliard also came up against a Gaudet Luce pairing who were on top of their game and couldn’t prevent another loss for Cleobury.

So with the overall match standing at 3-2 to Gaudet Luce it was left to the final match to decide the outcome.

The ever reliable James Ralph was paired with debutant Dan Clark and they gelled well together, ensuring that they were always on top in their match, before eventually running out winners (3&2) to ensure the overall match was halved 3-3.

After the match, captain Tony Willetts said “Although ideally in this competition, it’s important to win home matches, we did come up against some pairings from Gaudet Luce who played very well on the day, so we can be pleased with a halved match.

It was good to see the new players fitting in so well with the more established players.

Our next match is away against Perdiswell who are a new team to the league and their course is a bit of an unknown quantity for most players – so it won’t be easy, but hopefully with the players we have, we can go there and get a good result”.

How good is the course looking at the moment???

Men’s Betterball 11/3/12

Spring has seemingly sprung at Cleobury with the members enjoying the fantastic sunshine on show in the March betterball. Twenty eight teams took on the challenge and it was defending betterball champions Stuart Humphries and Richard Wright who were first out at 8am. They could not put a foot wrong and carded 45 points, this colossal score was leading all day. However in the mid afternoon sun Stevenson and Harthill were onto something very special. They also carded 45 points but a great effort on the back nine gave them a better count back score to take first place.

Once victory was assured the lads had this to say, ‘we knew we had a good score going but we did not get ahead of ourselves. We are delighted we joined Cleobury, the past month has been a whirlwind but we have settled into the club brilliantly’.

Final Standings -

1st - B. Stevenson & A. Harthill 45 points (back 9)

2nd - S. Humphries & R.Wright 45 points (back 6)

Men’s Double Roll Up
The double weekend roll ups continue to capture the imagination of the members of Cleobury with a fine field taking on the fantastic spring conditions. The relatively low scoring was down to the green staff who double cut the greens making them lightening quick and catching many off guard. Andy Greenhalgh (36) and Mark Shorter (37) finished fourth and third respectfully. The challenge for the top spot was between to great friends in Bob Lucas and John Westley. However John with a stunning finish managed to seal top spot by a single point finishing on 39 points to Bobs 38 points.
John has this to say after his victory ‘it was a great contest between Bob and myself, very nip and tuck but a great laugh with some good banter between the two of us, I am now looking forward to a busy season here at Cleobury’.
Final standings
1st - John Westley - 39 points
2nd - Bob Luxas - 38 points
3rd - Mark Shorter - 37 points
4th - Andy Greenhalgh - 36 points (B9)
All prizes can be collected from the pro shop - Please notes 2’s are balls like the summer roll ups.
